Prolagos has significantly increased the supply of potable water, now serving 98% of the urban population, and has achieved an 80% coverage rate for sanitation, surpassing the contractual targets of 94% for water and 80% for sewage. The company operates seven modern sewage treatment plants and has implemented over 157 km of sewer networks with a capacity to treat 97 million liters of sewage per day. Additionally, Prolagos has expanded and built two water treatment plants, 496.36 km of water mains, and 2,335.61 km of water distribution networks. These investments have played a crucial role in the recovery of the region's beaches and the Araruama Lagoon, a popular tourist attraction. The company's concession was awarded through an international public tender in 1998 and has been extended for an additional 18 years, with a validity until 2041.
