Bulgarian mineral extracting and processing company Kaolin was founded in 1924 in the Black Sea port of Varna.
In 2000 the company was privatized, local private firm Alpha Finance Holding acquired a majority stake in Kaolin through a capital increase. In May 2004, Kaolin bought the assets of Serbian company Srbokvarc for CSD 70.1 million, a move that enabled the Bulgarian company to operate one of the biggest quartz sand deposits on the Balkans estimated at over 30 million tonnes. In 2007, the company bought 51% in the Paperniansky glass sand opencast mine in Ukraine for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition took place after the Bulgaria-based company was licensed to develop a silica sand mine and a kaolin mine in Ukraine in 2006.

The Kaolin group comprises companies from Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, Ukraine and Albania. Among the major clients of the firm are leading manufacturers of glass, ceramic and porcelain products.
