Botswana Building Society, located in Gaborone, is Botswana's first homegrown commercial bank. It was licensed by the Bank of Botswana on October 6, 2022. The bank has a long history, previously existing as United Building Society, Botswana Building Society, and BBS Limited for over 50 years. In order to apply for a commercial banking license, the company changed its name to BBS Limited, as the law did not allow a building society to hold such a license. The necessary amendments to the Building Societies Act and the Companies Act were made in 2017 to enable this process.
