Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemicals Company (AFC) was established in 1976 as a public enterprise company and in 1996 the legal form of the company was changed to a Joint Stock Company. The company is mainly engaged in producing and selling nitrogen fertilizer products. Three plants located in Alexandria were established to fulfill market needs. In 1979 Abu Qir I commenced operations for the purpose of upgrading ammonia into urea. Then, in 1991 Abu Qir II was established to produce ammonium nitrate. Finally, in 1998, Abu Qir III was the first plant in Africa to produce granulated urea. The distribution of the company’s production of locally demanded nitrogen fertilizers—urea and ammonium nitrate is governed and regulated by the government and like the rest of nitrogen fertilizer companies operating in Egypt outside of free zones, Abu Qir is banned from exporting most of its products, in order to fill the supply gap existing in the local market. In year 2010, the company had a 70% local market share.
