Southern Peru Copper Corporation - SPCC is one of the first mining companies in Peru, the largest copper producer in the country and one of the top largest worldwide, operating in three units: Toquepala in Tacna, Cuajone in Mariscal Nieto and Ilo in Pacocha. SPCC was founded in 1952 with American Smelting and Refining Company, as principal shareholder. It was constituted formally in November 1954 and in 1960 began operating in the open pit mine Toquepala. It also owns the gold operation in the region Cajamarca Tantahuatay with the Company of Minas Buenaventura, local producer of precious metals. Its projects include the molybdenum-copper project and the project's Chancas Tia Maria copper in the Arequipa region. The company's main activities include extracting, grinding, concentrating, smelting, converting, processing, manufacturing, selling, exchanging and in general, producing and merchandising copper, molybdenum, gold, silver and any other kind of minerals. SPCC is a registered branch of Southern Copper (SCC) in Peru, and acts as an indirect subsidiary of Grupo Mexico.
