PKP S.A. was established on 1 January 2001 as a result of the commercialization of the Polish State Railways state enterprise. The sole shareholder is the State Treasury. The precursor of PKP S.A. – the PKP – was a state enterprise founded in 1926. PKP S.A. supervises and coordinates the activities of the companies of the PKP Group. These are the processes related to the improvement of management and setting strategies. PKP S.A. sets goals for the individual companies and ensures that they are implemented. It warrants the coherence of communication and marketing actions of the Group and actively participates in the initiation and implementation of a broader cooperation between the companies. A distinctive function of PKP S.A. is the ownership supervision and privatisation of the Group companies. These tasks are stipulated in the Act. Currently, several companies from the Group are being privatised, among others, PKP Cargo, TK Telekom and Drukarnia Kolejowa. Polskie Koleje Linowe was privatised in May 2013. Additionally, PKP S.A. is the owner and manager of a substantial part of the railway station infrastructure in Poland. It manages 2,500 railway stations and owns, among others, 30,000 flats and 100,000 parcels of real estate, of which approx. 10,000 have commercial potential and are planned to be put up for sale.
