Citi was first established in Turkey in 1975 and began to operate as a branch in 1981. Prior to this and as early as 1946, Citi was involved in a number of development projects such as motorway financings, power plants and dams. As the Turkish financial market grew in the 1980s, Citi expanded its Markets & Banking business by introducing new products and services. In 1996, Citi launched its Consumer Banking business and in 1998, Citi began providing Commercial Banking services. In 2006, Citi acquired a 20 per cent stake in Akbank, the country's largest privately owned bank. This strategic partnership reaffirms Citi's commitment to Turkey. Citi acquired Opus Menkul Degerler A.S. in 2007 and started offering equities services in Turkey through Citi Menkul Degerler A.S.
