A decision was taken to invest in the Energy Sector due to disrupted supply-demand balance and insufficient supply in the Turkish electricity sector. Adopting an environmental policy Polat Enerji decided to invest in renewable resources, directing its endeavors towards wind energy which is one of the most important and efficient sources of Turkey. In the Tender for BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) WPPs invited by the Ministry of Energy in 2000, Polat Enerji made an application for 390 MW and was awarded the tender. However, due to IMF’s practices for the liberalization of the energy sector, the tender was cancelled.
Along with the liberalization of the electricity market, Polat Enerji applied to the Energy Market Regulatory Agency for the licenses of 7 wind power plants with a power of approximately 330 MW and out of the said plants obtained licenses for 15-MW Çanakkale–Gelibolu-Burgaz, 30 MW-Manisa-Akhisar-Sayalar wind power plants in 2003 and 2004 respectively whereas the licenses for 141-MW Soma, 55 MW Balıkesir-Kepsut, 30 MW İzmir-Aliağa-Seyitali, 30 MW Samurlu and Kozbeyli in 2007.
Starting its investment in Burgaz and Sayalar wind power plants in September 2006 Polat Enerji commissioned the Burgaz plant in August 2007 and the Sayalar in May 2008. In addition to 50 million Euro invested in power plants up to this day, a further investment of about 500 million Euro is aimed to be made by 2011. With the actualization of all our investments in 2010, an average of 1.250.000.000 kWh of electricity shall be generated per year.
