The Heritage A.I.I. Insurance Company (T) Limited (“Heritage Tanzania”) began operating in November 1998, following the promulgation of the Insurance Act. Whereas the industry was previously controlled by a nationalised monopoly, encompassing the National Insurance Corporation and Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, the Act opened the insurance market to private participation. Heritage Tanzania is 60% owned by The Heritage A.I.I. Insurance Company Kenya, which is in turn 65% owned by NSE listed CFC Bank. The strong brand equity of the Heritage Group, which has a strong presence in East Africa, has enabled Heritage Tanzania to develop a leading market position in the Tanzanian private insurance market, accounting for around 20% of non-government gross premiums in 2005.
