Argentina occupies leading positions in the production and export of several agricultural commodities, ranking among the world’s ten biggest producers of soybean, maize, wheat, sunflower, beef and poultry meat. The agriculture sector plays a major role in Argentina’s economy, accounting for 5.2% of GDP, 53.2% of national exports and 5.6% of formal employment in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic had a low impact on agricultural activities in the country, which continued at a relatively normal pace. Nevertheless, the sector suffered from unfavourable weather conditions at the beginning of the 2020/2021 crop year, and a rising tax burden in the form of higher export tariffs on key products, such as soybean and soybean by-products. On the bright side, local beef and pork producers continued to expand production in 2020, benefiting from robust demand for meat by China and an uptick in international prices.
