Motor vehicle production was one of the sectors most affected by the recession that began in Argentina in the second quarter of 2018. The deterioration of macroeconomic conditions in 2018 pushed down both the domestic production and the sales of motor vehicles, by 1.4% and 10.9% y/y, respectively. An additional negative impact on the sector came from the austerity measures implemented by the government following the USD 56.3bn Stand-By loan agreed with the IMF. These included the reduction of export rebates and the introduction of export tariffs on several goods, including motor vehicles. The economic recession also exposed the structural deficiencies of the country’s automotive industry – low international competitiveness and high dependence on the economic cycle in Argentina and Brazil, its main export destination.
