Mining in Africa has a long history stretching back over a century, and minerals play a vital role in economies across the continent. Mining and quarrying* (including oil and gas) constitutes over 10% of GDP in over 15 African economies, and the export of mineral products represents over a fifth of the total exports value of the continent, 22.7% in 2018. Africa’s mineral reserves are also of global importance. Although the continent accounted for a moderate 4.5% of the estimated global mineral production volume in 2017, it supplies about a half or more of the manganese and chromium ores, cobalt, tantalum, platinum and other platinum group metals (PGMs), diamonds and some industrial minerals such as zirconium. It also contributes about a fifth to the global production of gold, uranium, bauxite, vanadium and phosphate rock. In 2018, Africa’s exports of minerals accounted for 6.1% of the global value of such exports and a sustained recovery of the prices of key metals and minerals supported growth of the mining sector. Fitch Solutions’ estimates of the industry value of 16 mineral producers indicate a 15.1% y/y increase that year. Moreover, investors’ interest seemed invigorated as, according to PWC, announced greenfield FDI projects in the sector (including oil and gas) increased to USD 16.8bn in 2018 from USD 10.6bn in 2017. This represents 22% of the total greenfield FDI in Africa that year.
