Brazil’s automotive sector was among the industries hit hardest by COVID-19. It suffered from disruptions in global supply chains, lockdown restrictions and falling domestic vehicle sales. As exports also underperformed, mainly as a result of depressed demand in Argentina – the main foreign destination – the production of motor vehicles tumbled to its lowest level since 2003. The crisis further deepened the structural problems of Brazil’s automotive sector – high idle capacity and specialisation in the production of passenger cars, which is not in line with the rising consumer preferences towards larger vehicles, such as SUVs, and electric vehicles (EVs). As a result, several vehicle makers launched a restructuring of their operations in Brazil. Although the sector is expected to return to growth in 2021, it is projected to reach pre-pandemic levels as early as 2022.
