Chile’s banking sector is one of the most developed and competitive in Latin America. It is deep, solvent and highly integrated with the global economy. After two years of deceleration, banking activity has started to gain pace since the second half of 2017, propelled by the uptick in the economy, rising consumer and business confidence, and an improving labour market. Accordingly, the value of outstanding deposits and loans rose by 8.2% and 9.7% y/y, respectively, as of September 2018. Based on these fundamentals, the banking sector managed to improve its indicators for portfolio quality, solvency, liquidity and profitability in 2017 and the first nine months of 2018. Moreover, this positive performance is expected to persist in the medium term, favoured by the stable expansion of the economy, the accommodative fiscal and monetary policy, and the recent regulatory changes that closed the gap with Basel III standards.
