Following a sharp downturn in Q2 2021, China’s insurance sector continued to contract in Q3. As a result, the premium income from June to September 2021 dropped by 4.0% y/y, softening compared to a contraction of 13.2% from April to June. The premium decline in Q3 further dragged the growth in Q1 – Q3 2021 to 1.3% y/y. This growth rate was also much slower than 6.5% in the same period of 2020 when China’s economy was gradually recovering from the pandemic crisis. Meanwhile, the insurance payment increased by 10.3% y/y in Q3 2021—continuing to squeeze insurers’ profits, which have been under pressure since Q2 2021. The slow consumption recovery and ongoing transitions in both life and property insurance subsectors remained the leading factors of the decline.
