As of the end of 2019, Latin America and the Caribbean accounted for 19.0% of the world’s crude oil reserves and 4.1% of natural gas reserves, turning the region into a prominent player in the global oil and natural gas industry. Nevertheless, its relative importance was on a decline over 2015-2019, due to weak discoveries as well as lower international crude oil prices during the period. Notably, the region’s oil reserves fell at an annual average rate of 0.1% between 2015 and 2019, while those of natural gas fell at a CAGR of 1.0% over the same period.
