In Q4 2018, the sales of motor vehicles in China were 7.6mn units, representing a decline of 13% y/y. Commercial vehicle sales remained relatively flat with a 0.9% y/y growth in Q4 2018, but the sales of passenger cars contracted by 15% y/y. China’s automobile industry faced unprecedented difficulties during 2018. The lacklustre auto market was conditioned by the slow growth of China’s GDP, the trade dispute with the US and the weakening consumer sentiment. According to CAAM’s forecasts, the downward trend in auto sales will continue in 2019.Annual auto sales fell 2.8% y/y to 28.08mn units in 2018, while production went down by 4.2% y/y. The production and sales of sedans fell by 4% y/y and 2.7% y/y, respectively. The output of SUVs, a category which underwent explosive development in recent years, dropped by 3.2% y/y and their sales declined by 2.5% y/y.
