Indonesia’s renewable energy (RE) sector is relatively small and dominated by hydro and geothermal installations. RE-based power had a 15% share in the country’s power capacity mix and contributed 13% to total power generation in 2020. Indonesia had installed 10.6 GW of cumulative RE power capacity as of end-2020, of which 6.2 GW is hydro, 2.1 GW geothermal and 1.9 GW bioenergy, according to data provided by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The solar and wind power segments are highly underdeveloped as the country’s grid connected a little over 300 MW as of end-2020. Indonesia is the second largest country in the world after the US in terms of installed geothermal capacity. However, it ranked eighth by total renewable power capacity in Asia in 2020.
