In order to keep up with rising demand in one of the world’s fastest growing economies, Turkey’s power sector has expanded at a rapid pace over the last decade. At the same time, increased electricity consumption has posed challenges for the electricity network, which often experiences overloads and blackouts. Around 15% of the electricity transmitted is lost and there are leakages across much of the network. To address these issues, the Turkish government has been pursuing apolicy leading towards liberalisation and privatisation of the power sector. Seeking to increase the country’s energy security, the government is taking steps to diversify energy supply and make greateruse of domestic resources, with an increased focus on renewables. To achieve those goals, an estimated investment of TRY 1.2bn is needed in the period 2015-2019.
