Monbat, which was established in 1959, is a leading producer of car batteries in Bulgaria. The product range of the company features starter batteries, stationary batteries, deep cycle batteries, batteries for special application, locomotive batteries, leisure batteries. The firm is a successor of state-owned company Akumicar.
In October 1998, Bulgarian lubricants producer Prista Oil and a management-employee buyout company Akumicar-98 bought 72% in Akumicar for USD 3.37 million. The buyers pledged to jointly invest USD 1.56 million in the battery maker over the next three years. In February 1999, Prista Oil acquired a 90% stake in the company after a seven-fold hike of the company capital.
