La Compania Nacional de Fuerza y Luz S.A. was founded 60 years ago and it is the main distributor company of electricity in the central metropolitan area of Costa Rica.Its services cover 903 km2 which represents 2% of the national territory. It is a state owned company, 98% of its stock was bought by the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity or ICE in 1968 to the American company Electric Bond and Share Co. It operates the hydroelectric project of "El Encanto" and starts the wind power project of Valle Central and the hydroelectric plant of Balsa Inferior.
