Slovenia-based Banka Koper was established in 1955 under the name Istrska komunalna banka. After several organizational restructurings and name changes the bank began operations under its present name in 1997.
Banka Koper’s shares were listed on the Ljubljana Stock Exchange in 2000.
In 2002 Italy-based banking group Sanpaolo IMI S.p.A. became the majority shareholder of the Slovenian bank. Five years later, in 2007, Banca Intesa and Gruppo Sanpaolo IMI merged into the Intesa Sanpaolo Group and Banka Koper became a member of the large international group.
